This is a 1:20,000 scale model of the Mount Arrowsmith watershed on Vancouver Island.

People are intrigued by landform models. This is the reaction within a minute of placing this model on a table at Mount Washington ski resort.

A New Technology That Makes 3D Topographical Landform Models Realistic and Affordable
The Innovation
The traditional method of building 3D topographical contour models involved a long process of cutting layers of material. These were stacked on top of each other to form the model. TRENTEC models are produced from one piece of material, which is formed to produce a realistic surface. Natural and structural features, information and design can be incorporated onto the model as required.
Some of the features that can be included on a TRENTEC 3 D model are:
- Roads, buildings, structural or engineered components
- Environmental details, land, water and surface textures
- Air Photo or satellite images
- Underwater features with a transparent surface
- Geological cross sections
- Subsurface engineering
TRENTEC three-dimensional models can be produced to almost any size or scale. The materials used are lightweight and durable. Examples of scales are:
- A model representing an area of land 40 kilometers x 20 kilometers, modeled at a scale of 1:20,000 would produce an actual model size 2 meters x 1 meter. See the Mount Arrowsmith watershed photo.
- A model representing an area of land 1000 meters x 800 meters at a scale of 1:1000 would produce an actual model size 100 centimeters x 80 centimeters.
The ratio of vertical to horizontal can be exaggerated if required to demonstrate added depth perspective.
TRENTEC 3D models have a wide range of potential applications:
- Tourist information:
- Site Layouts .. Roads & Trails .. Attractions .. Accommodations .. Parking .. Emergency Services ..
- Recreation:
- Ski runs .. Cross country trails .. Hiking trails.. Golf course layout ..
- Development:
- Concept design .. Engineering .. Structural layout .. Services .. Sub- surface components ...
- Transportation:
- Roads .. Traffic patterns .. Parking ..
- Environment:
- Creeks and water features .. Forested areas .. Sensitive ecosystems .. Watershed boundaries ..
- Services:
- Hydro lines .. Water & sewer .. Storm water management ..
- Operations:
- Road and trail maintenance .. Snow removal .. avalanche control .. Landscape maintenance ..
- Emergency Preperation:
- Search and rescue .. Fire control ..Avalanche .. Flood prevention .. Evacuation routes ..
- Education:
- History .. Environment .. Geology .. Climate ..
Marine and Aquatic Navigation .. Subsurface features .. Coastline interface .. Flood-line elevations ..
TRENTEC models are lightweight and portable, making them practical for:
- 1. PUBLIC DISPLAY
- Wall or table mount safely in public areas such as tourist centres, golf clubhouses, ski lodges, park interpretive centres, resort reception areas, marinas, facility lobbies and other gathering spots.
- 2. PRESENTATIONS
- Mount a model on the board room wall; take it to a meeting; display it at an open house, trade fair or conference; show your concept at a job site.
- 3. AT WORK
- Map out access roads, plan a development, define watercourses; display it in the office to show your work area to clients and visitors; use it to visualize remote site work.
- 4. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
- Use a model at an emergency center, community meeting, planning session or training class to define risks and solutions such as evacuation routes, avalanche control and response, primary obstacles, access to services, aircraft or helicopter landing sites, flood prevention strategy, and other critical information.
- 5. EDUCATION & ENVIRONMENT
- Locate the watershed boundaries; re-create the glacial shift; locate micro-climates and wildlife populations.
- 6. HAVING FUN!
- Plan an adventure or a hike in the wilderness; replay the round of golf again; plan a ski run; chart your course on the water.
- The list of practical uses for a 3D model is endless!
Do YOU need a 3D Model?
YES, if you are involved in any aspect of geographical and topographical work such as a:
- PLANNER, DEVELOPER, ENGINEER, FORESTER, MINER, PILOT
- EDUCATOR, RESEARCHER, ENVIRONMENTALIST, CLIMATOLOGIST
- GOVERNMENT LEADER, COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION
- EMERGENCY PLANNER, SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATOR
- TOURISM MANAGER/PROMOTER, SKI RESORT, GOLF COURSE
- SERVICE INDUSTRY, HIGHWAYS MAINTENANCE
- DIVER, MARINE NAVIGATOR ...
...the list is endless.
